Adelaid should have known the bubble would pop. It was the story of life with ADHD. Ups and downs, yin and yang, intense periods of productivity followed by complete psychic depletion.

After freshening up at their hotel, her room even more posh than the jet, they headed straight to the lab.

Shucking a lab coat over her vintage wool pants and high-collared button-down shirt made her look like an Oompa Loompa. Then she was off, sporting goggles, gloves, booties, and clutching a non-disclosure agreement she’d signed while on a video call with Hadley who had talked her through it; Adelaid tagged along behind the dozen others on the tour.

The lab was out of this world. All shiny surfaces and insane technology, and more big pointy things with “scope” at the end of the name than she could hope to remember, not that she was allowed to write about them.

And then there was Ted. The shiniest thing of all.

Yes, she’d spent time with Ted in his Dr Strange lair. She’d watched him work with his fancy computers and his neat rows of pencils, while wearing his serious face. She’d heard him on the phone, using his boss man phone voice, and it was hot as hell.

But here, in the wild, prowling through his natural environment, surrounded by groupies drooling over his every word, the man was king.

People came out of their offices to meet him, swarmed him like he’d just kicked the thousandth goal of his career and they were there to witness it. He asked cutting questions, drilled down hard into the answers he was given, with no compunction at all. He led the lab owners around their own space as if he owned it already. And they loved him for it.

Somehow, over the past weeks, she’d forgotten that that was the reason why she’d wanted to interview him in the first place. Not merely because he was a cute billionaire, and that kind of things sells, or so that she might get to know the man behind the name, but because he was a man of import.

His work was groundbreaking. His time infinitely precious.

He was Ted Freaking Fincher, literally saving the world one discovery at a time.

Her small suburban dreams were nothing compared to his. Yes, they were valid. And important. To her. She’d fought for them, worked for them, earned them.

But just because he kept a cactus alive, or enjoyed her muffins, didn’t mean he was changing. Or able to change. His path was well-carved, from hardest stone. Believing he might change his mind, so that he could squish himself into the small box she’d carved out for herself, was only going to end in heartbreak.

Feeling like an overfull balloon that had suffered a tiny prick and was slowly deflating, Adelaid slipped quietly away from the group and made her way back outside into the bright beachy sunshine.

Finding a bench by a fountain in a small private garden in which to wait out the tour, she slipped off her mask, and gloves, and checked her phone.
